The coloratura soprano Dorothea Wirtz graduated with honors from her studies with Elisabeth Grümmer and Hugo Diez at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Berlin and with Hanno Blaschke at the University of Music in Munich.
Acting lessons at the Max Reinhard Institute in Berlin and an apprenticeship as a breathing instructor completed her education.

Engagements at the Bavarian State Opera, the Staatstheater Kassel and the Zurich Opera House followed in 1978, where she was heard in roles such as Blonde, Olympia, Rosina, Despina, Queen of the Night, Adele, Marzelline, Gilda and Adina. Guest engagements led her to Berlin (Staatsoper unter den Linden and Deutsche Oper), Vienna (State Opera and Volksoper), Stuttgart, Cologne, Madrid, Milan, Venice, Bologna, Florence (Maggio Musicale) Catania, Palermo, Buenos Aires, Mexico City.

In 1979 she won the Mozartfest competition in Würzburg.

She performed at the Schleswig-Holstein Festival, the Rheingau Festival and the Salzburg January Festival.

During her career, Dorothea Wirtz sang with conductors such as Zubin Mehta, Carlos Kleiber, Ferdinand Leitner, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Christoph Eschenbach and Nicolaus Harnoncourt and with colleagues such as Hermann Prey, Edita Gruberova, Hildegard Behrens and Martti Talvela. Matti Salminen or Kurt Moll.

Radio and television recordings as well as CD recordings were made during these years.

From 1995-2000 Dorothea Wirtz was professor for voice at the Hochschule für Musik Cologne. In 2000 she was appointed to the University of Music in Freiburg.

Students of Dorothea Wirtz are laureates of many competitions, engaged in national and international opera houses or successfully pursue educational activities.
